Obituary: Democratic Northwest, April 1, 1897, p. 1, col. 6 Woodburn. John Woodburn was born in Tuscarawas County, Ohio May 25th, 1811; was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Yant of that county March 24th, 1847. Of this union there were seven children born -- three girls and four boys, William, the eldest, now a resident of Nebraska. James died in Tuscarawas Co., and Robert S., of this place. Neighbor Woodburn and family moved from Tuscarawas County to our neighborhood Dec. 23, 1853, and settled on the John Lingle farm in Freedom Township, this county, where they have since resided. Here in a log house with but little improvements, surrounded by heavy forests and few neighbors, lived Mr. Woodburn, reared his family, and by hard and honest toil the few acres of cleared land were broadened and enlarged to a well improved farm, being assisted and encouraged by his faithful companion whose cheerful disposition and pleasant words cast many rays of sunshine on the pathway of life. But alas, on the 5th day of January, 1853, Heaven claimed its own Although feeling keenly the loss of his amiable companion, he has continued to live on the old homestead with his faithful daughters Susan and Emmarilla, who, as the shades of life were longer grown, have comforted and smoothed the pathway of life for their aged father, whose cheery words always welcomed his neighbors and friends. Since December last, his health has rapidly declined, enduring his suffering with much patience, choosing rather to hide his suffering rather than worry his loved ones with a knowledge of the same. On the 18th day of March, 1897, John Woodburn departed this life, aged 85 years, 10 months and 33 days. "He hath gone to his grave in full age; as a shock of corn in its season." A kind neighbor, a faithful husband and a loving father has left. W. C. K |
