Obituary: On Sunday morning last Earl Van Pelt of Harrison township left home, going to the widow Watson's, where he met Frank Swarner of Liberty township, who said he was compelled to go home and feed the horses and asked Van Pelt to accompany him, which he did, they taking a boat to cross the river about 11 o'clock near Batdorf's mill. Nothing was seen of the boys after that, and they not returning home their parents and friends became alarmed Monday evening at their continued absence and a search was instituted. The river was dragged, but with no success until Tuesday forenoon when the body of Swarner was taken from the water near the Weaver landing, on the opposite side. The body of Van Pelt was found in the afternoon, near the cheese factory, near the Texas ferry. The boys were about 20 years of age each, and neither could swim. Just how the accident occurred no one knows, but it is supposed they were fooling and upset the boat The river was calm at the time of the disaster, therefore the boat could not have upset on account of wind or roughness. The boat was taken from the river at the Texas ferry. Both were excellent young men, and their sad ending has cast a gloom over the entire neighborhood. |
