1887-01-13Pg. 1 Col. 4STOCKMAN. Again has a cloud of sorrow come over our community, the memory of which will not soon pass away. On Sunday morning, December 26, 1880, we were startled with surprise and grief by the announcement of the death of our friend and citizen, Frederick Stockman, who died at his home on High street, after a painful illness of three long weeks. His health being poorly for years, it was hoped at first he would rally and be spared to his family to get well. Anxious enquiries were made by neighbors and friends day after day, until Sabbath morning, at the early hour of five o'clock death relieved him of his suffering. He was born in Germany, on the 23d of November, 1840. Departed this life December 26, 1886, aged 46 years, 1 month and 3 days. Was married to Anna C. Rogge, May 25, 1867. And from these parents were born four children, of which two sons have already departed and gone on before, while a wife and two daughters still remain to mourn the loss of a kind husband and affectionate father. His funeral took place on Tuesday forenoon from the St. Paul Lutheran church, Rev. Fisher officiating. The text was the 11th chapter of St. John, the 25 and 26 verses. His remains were laid at rest in the Oakdale Cemetery to await the resurrection morn. Mr. Stockman came to Ohio at the age of five years. His father being one of the early settlers in Henry county, bought a farm of 120 acres, five and one-half miles south-west of Napoleon in the wilderness. Mr. Stockman being the second oldest son, was elected to help clear and improve his father's farm which he willingly did at the age of 17. His father gave him liberty to work for himself, when he concluded to learn the carpenter trade with David Hartman of this place, which he worked at up to the time of the war. He enlisted as a private in Co. F, 14th O. V. M. , and was also enrolled on the 19th day of April, '61, and served three months and was discharged on the 13th day of August, 1861; he was again employed by Mr. Hartman and worked for him until the following year. He enlisted the second time and was enrolled as a private in Co. B, 100th Reg't., O. V. I., on the 3rd day of August, 1862, at Napoleon, under Capt. Taylor, and was mustered into U. H. service as such for the period of three years, on the 1st day of September, 1862, at Toledo, by Capt. Howard. He was a prisoner on Bell Island from the 8th day of September, 1863, to the 14th day of March, 1864, making 188 days; during that time he, with thousands of others, suffered starvation, which shortened the lives of many citizens who to-day would have been in the prime of manhood.
