Obituary: Captain A. H. Stanton We were saddened by the announcement in a Toledo newspaper, that Captain A. H. Stanton, of the First U. S. Cavalry, died at the residence of his father, Hon. Benjamin Stanton, in Wheeling, Va., January 3. Twenty years ago we had some connection with his father, in the practice of law, in Bellefontaine; and we vividly recall, even at this distance of time, the bright, handsome, generous boy, whose future was so full of promise. No pains, no expense, was spared in his education. He graduated at Yale College in 1859 or 1860. When the war began, and troops were called for, Aleck Stanton was the first man in Bellefontaine to write his name as a volunteer. He was subsequently promoted, and seems to have made a final choice of military life. That so much brightness of intellect, and such thorough scholarship, and so many engaging qualities of heart, should for any reason be subordinated to the shoulder-straps of a Cavalry officer, is lamentable. Captain Stanton was only 32 years of age at the time of his death. |
