Obituary:

DROWNED -- EMMA SPROU, an excellent young lady, living at the residence of Joseph Daoust, was drowned in the canal on Tuesday. She attempted to cross the canal in the forenoon, on a board placed on the lee. The ice having become rotten was not sufficient to bear her weight and she fell in the water and was drowned. No person saw her and she was not missed until about noon. Inquiry about the neighborhood was made for her and no person having seen her, search was made and a place in the ice discovered, which had the appearance of some mishap having occurred. A pike pole was procured and in a few minutes the body of the unfortunate girl was recovered. Miss Sprou was about twenty years old and her relatives live in Delaware township. She was a good girl, well liked by all who know her. Defiance Dem.
