Obituary: R. R. ACCIDENT! Man Cut to Pieces at Holgate! A correspondent in Flatrock township sends us the particulars of a distressing accident which happened on Saturday at Holgate. On that day, at about 6 o?clock, James E. Smith, son of J. Smith, and George Wells boarded the through freight on the B. & O. at Deflance, with the intention of going to their homes. The train does not atop at Holgate, so both jumped from the moving cars, and in doing so Smith fell under the wheels in such a manner that his head was literally crushed into a jelly, one arm cut off and the balance of his body terribly mutilated and mangled. Parts of the head had to be gathered up into a basket. The unfortunate man leaves a wife and one child to mourn his untimely end, as well as parents, brothers and sisters. He was well liked in the neighborhood in which he lived, and all extend sympathy to the bereaved ones. This is another sad warning against jumping from moving trains. |
