Obituary:

Probably never before in the history of Napoleon has our city passed through a more exciting time than during the past week, brought about by the tragic death of Wm. Sheffield, which necessarily closed the doors of the bank of which he was a partner. The community was at once flooded with all manner of wild rumors, which were augmented and intensified when it was known that the Vocke Bros. were embarrassed. The agitation was at fever height, which has been allayed wonderfully by the Vocke Bros. resuming their business, and assurances being given that the bank was perfectly solvent and that its doors would be opened and business resumed so soon as the necessary legal forms could be gone through with, that of the appointment by the Court of an administrator, or somebody to take care of the interests of the estate of Mr. S. We have reliable assurances that the doors of the bank will be thrown open for business within the next week, in fact that the bank is prepared to resume business at once if it were not for the legal formalities which have to be gone through with. Concerning a few of the wild rumors which have been floating through the community we wish to speak, in order that the minds of the people may be disabused of matters which are not truthful. It has been currently reported that Mr. Sheffield has lost heavily in western mining stocks, something like $60,000; also that he lost largely by the failure ot the Turnbulls, and that he was encumbered heavily through the Vockes. The facts are, and we believe we know whereof we speak, Mr. Sheffield has probably lost in mining stock $8,000, not to exceed that amount; the Turnbull failure cost him no more, if not less, than $3,000, and his transactions with the Vockes, which involves a sum of not over $30,000, is abundantly secured, so that not a dollar is lost there.
