We regret exceedingly, after the sad and deplorable occurrence of last week Wednesday afternoon, that the name of Hon. Wm. Sheffield figured in one of our political squibs of that week. But it must be remembered when we learned of the death of Mr. Sheffield it was after our forms had gone to press, and the item penned when Mr. S. was in life, and a prominent political opponent. We are not in the habit ot apologizing for what is said in our political columns, especially in the midst of a campaign, but in the above case, and the fact of the untimely death of Mr. S., it is no more than justice to those whom it wounded, and to ourselves as well, that we make this explanation.
