Obituary:

SUICIDE! HON. WILLIAM SHEFFIELD. DELIBERATELY SHOOTS HIMSELF THROUGH THE HEART. A short time after we had gone to press the startling news was brought us that the Hon. Wm. Sheffield had committed suicide by shooting himself through the heart. There are but few particulars to give. Gov. Scott was in company with the deceased at about 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon, and when they parted Mr. S. repaired to his residence, where he remained until about 8 o'clock, when he went down town. In the meantime Mrs. Sheffield and her daughter, Mrs. Colonel J. D. Norton, went out riding. He returned to the house at about 4 o'clock, laid down upon a lounge, opened his vest and coat and fired the fatal shot. His wife and daughter returned at about 5 o'clock; Mrs. S. entering the residence, found her husband dead, lying upon the lounge, the fatal pistol lying at his side upon the floor. The only cause for the rash act known at this writing is opium! Mr. S. in former years was a slave to the deadly poison, but had lately conquered the habit, but we learn he had again become addicted to it, and that he had remarked to a friend that if the habit grew upon him as it had formerly he would end his misery by taking his own life. This being the case there is probably no doubt but this is the immediate cause of the horrible crime. Upon learning of the sad act, horror was upon every countenance, and it was hard to make citizens realize that the deed was a reality. Mr. S. was one of the most prominent citizens of Napoleon, as he was in this part of the State, and the horrible ending of a life which had been so useful cast a gloom over Napoleon which no other occurrence had ever done. The sympathies of the entire community go out to the stricken companion and the immediate family. Peace be to his ashes.
