Obituary: Another old and respected citizen passed from this life into the great hereafter on Thursday last, in the person of James Shasteen, Sr. He died of paralysis, having had several strokes previous to the one which proved fatal on last Thursday. Mr. Shasteen died in the 73d year of his age, having lived here for over half a century. His funeral took place from his late residence on the 1st inst ., the services being held in the Eniou Chapel, this township, conducted by Rev. Sprang. Mr. Shasteen was born in Bock Ridge county, Virginia, March 2nd, 1816, and came to Richland township, now in Defiance county, and settled near the hamlet of Independence in the year 1826. In 1838 he was married to Mary Ann Zeigier, of Pleasant township, this county, who survives him. Had he lived a few months longer, he could have celebrated his golden wedding. Immediately after his marriage he went into the woods of Pleasant township, built a cabin house, and commenced the clearing of a farm, where he continued to reside until he removed to Napoleon. Shortly after his settlement in Napoleon he purchased from the State the East half of Southeast Quarter of Sec 10, Napoleon township, upon which he settled, cleared up and improved with his own hands, and made what is now a beautiful and valuable farm with buildings, and valuable improvements, lying immediately adjoining the corporation of Napoleon. But James Shasteen, like other pioneers, has passed to his reward. He was a man of great industry and energy, and was, withal a natural mechanic, and was always employed in making something useful to himself or others in a new country. He was honest and upright in all his dealings with other men, and ever ready to assist his neighbors when assistance was needed in the early settlement of this county. Highly respected by all for his honesty and probity in the battle of life, he nevertheless did not forget his duties to God, being a consistent member of the United Brethren Church for many years. Napoleon, P., Jan. 2, 1888. |
