Obituary: DEATH OF DR. H. M. SHAFFER -- It is with sincere sorrow that we announce the death of Rev. H. M. SHAFFER, widely known and respected as a preacher of the Methodist Episcopal Church, of which he was a traveling minister for nearly forty years. He died near Richwood, Ohio, on the 27th of December last, aged sixty-eight years. His disease was softening of the brain, superinduced, no doubt, by excessive mental labor. Dr. SHAFFER was a man of very unusual intellectual power, and was considered one of the strong men of his Church. He was not showy, nor declamatory, nor sensational, but was fond of devoting the energies of a clear and logical mind to the vindication of the doctrinal tenets of his Church. We knew him well. For some years we were his next door neighbor in Bellefontaine, and, for himself and family, we have always entertained the sincerest regard and respect. He has passed away, in the fullness of years, and left to many worthy descendants the great treasure of an honored name. |
