Obituary: Residents of the quiet little village of Okolona were horrified last Thursday morning to learn that one of their old neighbors had taken his own life by hanging, in the person of George Schleiser. On Thursday morning Mr. Schleiser was attending to his saloon business as usual. At about 8:30 o'clock he waited upon a young man, who noticed that Schleiser had some kind of a string in his hand; about fifteen minutes afterwards his body was found hanging to a rafter in the ice house. He evidently repaired to the ice house on the young man leaving the saloon, and with the aid of a short ladder threw one end of the string over a rafter and made it fast, the other he tied around his neck and then jumped from the ladder, Strangling to death. His wife, having occasion to go into the yard, discovered the ice house door open and on going to close it saw the body of her husband hanging within. Her shrieks soon brought helping hands, who cut the body down and sent for medical aid, but it was too late, as life was extinct. Schleiser was 69 years old, always a peaceable and jovial citizen. What occasioned him to do the rash act we have not learned, but it must have been something which weighed upon and unbalanced his mind. His funeral took place on Saturday, a large concourse paying a last tribute to his memory. Peace be to his ashes. |
