HORRIBLE ACCIDENT.
TWO CITIZENS OF NAPOLEON KILLED BY THE CARS.
A Sad New Year Ending.
As train No. 4 on the Wabash passed Haly Avenue crossing Tuesday night, at about 10:30, the train being an hour overdue, a sleigh containing a party of five was run into with horrible results, which has cast a gloom over the entire community.
The party consisted of Frank Long, Wm. Rohrs, Henry Arps, Geo. Eggers and Wm. Arps, on their way to attend a New Year dance at Hograffe's in Freedom township. They hired a sleigh and double team of Mr. Russ Jones, but had gone but a short distance upon their journey when the horrible fate overtook them, which sent two of their number into the great hereafter.
Passengers upon the train say the whistle was sounded for the crossing, and that the train was not running at a speed of over ten nines an hour, but it is supposed the storm prevented the occupants from hearing the train approaching. The horses got nearly over the track when the engine struck them, killing one outright and injuring the other so that it will die, and tearing the vehicle to pieces. Two of the occupants were found in the cattle guard, horribly mangled and dead -- Mr. Frank Long and Wm. Rohrs. The others escaped injury, with the exception of Henry Arps, whose back was somewhat injured.
The dead and injured were conveyed to the engine house, where hundreds looked upon the sad scene that night and the next morning. The body of Mr. Long was frightfully mangled, the head cut and mashed and both legs cut and broken below the knees. He leaves a young wife. The body of Mr. Rohrs was not so badly mangled as that of Mr. Long. The head was cut and mashed and the back cut and badly bruised. He also leaves a young wife. Both of the victims are citizens of Napoleon. Mr. Rohrs is a brother of Mr. F. W. Rohrs, and a partner in the grocery business, and Mr. Long was a clerk in the same establishment.
The coroner held an inquest Jaw yesterday afternoon, the result of which we have not learned.
