Obituary: Death of Elijah Reynolds. After a long and lingering illness Elijah Reynolds departed this life on Thursday morning last. He was born Sept. 22, 1804, at Verbank, Duchess county, New York, and came to Napoleon from Massachusetts in the spring of 1854. This was the year before the Wabash R. R. was built. He was engaged here in the grocery and drug business, in which he remained until the close of the civil war, when his eyesight began to fail him. In the year 1876 he went to Cleveland and had an operation performed on his eyes, which resulted after much suffering in total blindness. From this time on his health gradually failed, terminating in dropsy, from effects of which he died July 8th, in the 82d year of his age. Mr. R. in his earlier life was superintendent of cotton mills in Vermont, New York, Massachusetts and South Carolina, and for a time carried on the cotton business for himself. He wasmarried to Abby S. Tyler, sister of Hon. J. and Dr. A. H. Tyler of this place, June 10th, 1839, after which he settled in Burkshire county, Massachusetts. Two children remain to mourn the loss of a father, Mrs. H. Brown, of Milwaukee, Wis. , and C. E. Reynolds, Esq., of this place, with whom he resided from the close of the civil war until his death. Father Reynolds was known as an honorable and genial man by all with whom he came in contact, and for many years had been a patient sufferer, during which all that loving hearts and hands could do was done for him. His funeral took place Friday, from the residence of his son, and he was laid to rest in Glenwood Cemetery by the side of his wife, who had proceeded him the other shore some thirty years. |
