Obituary:

Note: Obit says Writheman, but the name is almost certainly Reiterman, based on other research.

Wednesday, March 4th, January Writheman, Harrison tp., aged about 60 years, was joined in the holy bonds of matrimony, Mary Miller composing the other side of that partnership, which nobody will deny figures for better or for worse. But few hours had passed since the ceremony before it was perfectly manifest that this was a case of "worse." The pair in celebrating the occasion imbibed too freely of strong drink, and before leaving the town were slightly intoxicated. They retired to his farm in Harrison tp., and there the honeymoon might have passed off in ineffable felicity had not the groom still continued preferring the love of Bacchus and his goods to that of his spouse. Still, from the deplorable event that followed he certainly must have had a little love for his newly made wife 'twas probably latent. She left him on Tuesday with the injunction that as his intoxication was prolonged, likewise would her absence be. Her husband raved, "acted up" like and swore he would suicide. On Wednesday afternoon, nailing a cleet above the stairway, and wrapping a rope twice around his neck, tied the other end to the cleet. It was a novel gallows. Jumping from the stairs his feet struck the floor, but by pulling up his feet he succeeded in closing his book of errors on this mundane sphere. The body was found soon after by a visiting neighbor and cut down. Coroner Bitzer was notified, who, after viewing the remains, brought in a verdict of suicide. Of course the deserting wife is heart broken and is suffering from nervous prostration, remorse, etc.
