The North-West, September 5, 1860:
Sad and Afflicting Casualty -- On Saturday last, two little children, one a son of Mr. L. G. Randall, and the other a son of Mr. J. Marris, both of whom reside on the south side of the river, opposite this place, went down to the river, and stripping off their clothes, went into the water. No person observed their movements, but they had been gone but a short time when Mr. Marris' boy ran up to the house and told his mother that his little playfellow had "went under the water and didn't come up any more." Mr. M. gave the alarm, the neighbors hurried to the river, but alas, too late! His body was found a short distance from the shore. Every means possible were resorted to for his resuscitation, but in vain. He was a bright, active, intelligent little fellow, between three and four years of age. In their sudden and terrible bereavement, the afflicted parents have the sympathies of the entire community.
