Obituary:

Suicide - Justice J. H. Hague, of this place convened a jury of inquest on Friday last, upon the body of John Raferty, who had resided for a short time past about four miles west of this place. Mr. Raferty was a native of the "Emerald Isle," and had resided for many years in this county, and had always borne the reputation of being 'an honest man.' He had for some time been laboring under depression of spirits, from some real and supposed losses, but no one suspected, until quite recently, that he had had any intention of committing suicide. He told his son some weeks ago, that during last fall and in the winter, he had contemplated on two occasions to destroy himself, but his family thought he had given up all such intentions.
On last Thursday morning at an early hour, he left home to visit a near neighbor, after going a half mile he returned and was observed by a member of his family, getting some article from a bureau, but still excited no suspicion of his real intentions, noon came and he did not return when his family commenced a search for him, and in the evening he was found three or four hundred yards from his house dead. He had taken a razor with him, and after taking off his hat and coat and put the razor bo into his pocket, rolled up his sleeve and severed all the muscles, blood vessels and nerves on the inside of his arm at the elbow, he threw down the razor and walked a few rods in the direction of his house where he fell on his face and died apparently without a struggle. He left considerable wealth to a widowed wife and disconsolate children. The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the foregoing facts.
