Obituary:

Fatal Accident. On Wednesday forenoon of last week a sad and fatal accident befell Levi Pittman, one of the old residents of Marion Township. Mr. Pittman had loaded a wooden cistern on his wagon at Frank Zoll's, on the Ridge, and was about ready to start for home, when the horses frightened at the cistern and commenced to run. Mr. P. ran in front of them and grabbed the reigns and after struggling for a time with the horses was thrown down and the team and wagon passed over him. He was immediately approached and when asked if he was hurt said he could not last long; he was carried into Mr. Zoll's yard and when laid down it was found that he was dead. Upon examination but few braises were found upon his body, but one large braise was noticed in the middle of his back, which is supposed to have been made by the tongue or some part of the wagon striking him, and which caused death. Mr. Pittman had resided in this county for the past twenty-five years; he moved to Ohio from Pennsylvania, settling in Crawford county, where he married a sister of Treasurer Gidley, of this county; from there he moved to Marion Tp., thence to Damascus tp and back to Marion tp., this county, when he resided up to his sad death. He had been to Napoleon the week before, making his report of personal property assessments, he having been elected assessor of his township this spring, which was the last time many of his old friends here saw and conversed with him. He was in the 56th year of his age, and leaves a wife and six children to mourn their loss. One married daughter had preceded him to the grave. He was buried in the Hockman burying ground near MoClure on Friday, his funeral being largely attended. The family have the deep sympathies of the entire community in this their hour of sorrow.
