Obituary: Jas. Phelan, an old and respected citizen, died at his residence in Napoleon on the night of the 27th. Mr. Phealan [sic] was born about the year 1810, in the county of Kilkenny, Ireland, emigrating to this country at the age of 23. He lived In New York, Pennsylvania, and other Eastern States until 1847, when he moved to the then wilds of Northwestern Ohio where be settled. "Jimmy," as he was familiarly called, responded to the call for troops to defend the old flag, enlisting In the 124th Regt., O. V. I., and served during the entire war. At the close of the war he returned home and was employed by the Wabash Railway for a number of years. Six years ago be accepted a government position here carrying the mail from the post office to the depot, a position he held up to the 1st of July. [Name spelled Phelan and Phealan] |
