Obituary: Drowning of Former Napoleon Boy. We clip the following sad news from the Oberlin News of the 11th. Mr. Munger was a former resident of this place, and while living here was known as an excellent young man. His sad fate will be regretted by many old acquaintances: "The friends of the family of Wm. B. Munger, residing on East Lorain street, were greatly shocked on Tuesday afternoon to learn by telephone from Mr. G. W. Gibson that the eldest son, Frank J. Munger, had been drowned in the lake. A party of about fifteen Oberlin people went to Randall's grove, about three miles east of the village of Lorain, on that morning for a day's pleasure and recreation, Geo. W. Gibson taking a load and the others going in separate conveyances. In the afternoon Frank Munger took a boat and after rowing about some time came in and put on a bathing suit and with others went out into the lake some distance, using a board for a float, and when within about forty rods of the beach, let loose from the board and commenced to swim. He called for help, but went down in about five feet of water. The company on the shore, among which were his mother, sister, brother and intended bride, soon realized his danger, and several men hastened to the spot with boats and in bathing suits, but the body had disappeared, and the sad fact was realized that Frank was drowned. The search continued all the afternoon and until 9 o'clock in the evening, one young man from Elyria diving many times with no result. It is supposed that he was taken with sudden cramping, and when he went down was carried away by the under current. Fred Chaucey and John Watson immediately drove to Lorain as rapidly as possible and secured Dr. J. S. Dale, who kindly came and rendered such assistance as he could to the friends, but be could do nothing to restore the life of the one under the water. The sad company reached home about 5 o'clock in the afternoon. Mr. L. R. Fields, and Fred. Munger, the younger brother of Frank, remained, and with Mr. Randall, the proprietor of the grove, and others, watched the shore and rowed about in the lake until 9 o'clock in the evening and resumed the search the next morning, assisted by some young men from Lorain with grapling hooks, but up to late in the afternoon the body had not been found. Frank J. Munger was 24 years of age on the 4th of this month, and was a member of the-First Congregational Church. He was soon to have been married to Miss Nellie Blynn of this place, and intended to locate in Kansas. Mr. Munger and family are very grateful to all who have so kindly assisted in their affliction. Appropriate funeral services will be held in due time. |
