Obituary: On last Saturday Napoleon was called upon to give up another of its oldest pioneers by the death of David Meekison, Sr., father to our Mayor, Judge David Meekison. He had reached the advanced age of 80 years, 11 months and 19 days, and although this old, the hardy Scotch stock to which he belonged gave him remarkable command of his faculties in both mind and body. It was, then, more old age than disease that caused his life to quietly take its departure from a world in which he had so long been an inhabitant. He was born in Scotland and emigrated to America in the Spring of 1851, first locating at Genessee Valley, NY, where he lived one year. Not liking the place he migrated to Henry county where he has since lived. He sent for his family, consisting of wife and sons, James, John and David, whom he left at Dundee, Scotland, and who arrived here in 1855. He settled in Henry county when it was a wild and unbroken wilderness and has seen many radical changes a transformation from swamps and forests into cultivated fields and thriving towns. The funeral of Mr. Meekison was held from the residence of his son David on Haly avenue, Sunday afternoon, with Rev. Donahey in charge. The remains were laid to their final rest in Glenwood cemetery. |
