Sad Accident -- On Tuesday morning a sad accident occurred at the B. & O. Depot, which resulted in the death of John McDonald, of Napoleon, uncle of our fellow townsman Angus Grant. Mr. McDonald was at the depot in company with his sister who was going east on the accommodation. He was standing on the platform of the coach and when the train started out he got off on the main track. A freight train was backing and Mr. McD., not seeing it was struck by the rear car, knocking him down, terribly mutilaitng him. He had his right leg mashed up to the knee, his left foot badly bruised, five ribs broken and several bad cuts about the head. He lived about an hour.
Coroner Kuhl was informed of the accident and at 2 o'clock the following jury was summoned: H.C. Bouton, Joseph Smith, Peter Jennings, Frank Baker, Walter Jennings and Benj. woodcock, who after examining several witnesses returned the following verdict: "Deceased came to his death by nervous shock, caused by injuries received in being knocked down by a passing train of the B. & O. R. R. Co.
The remains of John McDonald were taken to the residence of Mr. Grant and on Wednesday deposited in the cemetery. Defiance Democrat.
