Obituary:

A HORRIBLE DEATH AT HOLGATE. A Drunken Rough Burns Himself to Death. On the night of the 16th Coroner Cloud received word that his services were needed at Holgate, over the remains of one McCullough, who was burned to death. The particulars of the horrible affair are as follows: Jas. McCullough, a drunkard and a rough citizen generally, got on a spree on Wednesday last and was locked up in the cooler to sober off. After his arrest, and while being taken to lock-up, he made threats to burn the building. He was searched twice, and it was supposed all matches were taken from mm, but it seems that he had others in his clothing. He fired the bunk and lay down in it. Smoke was noticed pouring from the windows and an alarm was given. The door was opened and his body was found burned to a crisp in what remained of the bunk. The fire was extinguished before the building was much damaged. Coroner Cloud held an inquest and a verdict was rendered that the unfortunate man came to his death by his own hands.
