Obituary: A Party of Twenty Struck by a Fast Express. Chicago, Jan. 1. A special to the Inter Ocean from Fort Wayne, Ind., says: At 8 o'olock this evening the fast express bound east under a high rate of speed struck a sled containing twenty young people who were crossing the track of the Pittsburg, Ft. Wayne and Chicago R. R., two miles east of this city, en route to a country residence for the purpose of attending a dance. Mrs. Lizzie Lepper, aged 23, and Miss Tina Menecker, aged 17, were instantly killed. Miss Lottie Fix had her right leg broken; Miss Lizzie Kanning, ribs broken; Miss Lena Haight, arm broken; Miss Emma Shuler, leg broken; Miss Lizzie Weilko and Miss Belle Bishop, badly bruised and suffering from nervous prostration. The party was being driven by Byron Westrunib, who saw the train approaching rapidly and was implored by the men to stop but did not heed them. The gentlemen jumped out but the ladies did not succeed in doing this until too late. |
