Obituary: Gone to His Rest. (From the Bee, 22d) The Bee received this morning the following announcement of the death of H. S. Knapp, the historian, well known throughout Northwestern Ohio: "H. S. Knapp, author of the history of the Maumee Valley, died to-day, at Melbern Station, aged about 65 years, at the residence of his son, Thomas Knapp. I. O. W. Thus passes away one of the most open hearted, generous, unselfish men of the time. Mr. Knapp was well-known throughout every nook and corner of Northwestern Ohio and probably no man was so thoroughly versed in the history of this section of the state. His highest pleasure was to recount with some friend the pioneer incidents of the Maumee Valley and note the changes that had taken place. His History of the Maumee Valley is a standard volume in this section of Ohio -- one abounding In interest and instruction. His mind was well stored with legend, incident and statistical information,and he has been a constant contributor to the newspaper press for a number of years. He was a warmhearted, genial friend, generous to a fault and much esteemed by all who knew him; as a writer, he was direct and terse, andevery sentence was freighted with meaning and Information. None who read the announcement of the old historian's death will fail to think of him kindly or drop a tear to his memory. |
