Obituary:

Of all the old pioneers in Henry county there are none who have lived here or who have worked harder in bringing the county to its present very high standard, than Thomas Kinney who has been a resident of Napoleon township 47 years. A resident this length of time, his acquaintance must necessarily be broad, and through it all passed a feeling of great grief and regret at the intelligence of his death which occurred last Wednesday at his home after a protracted illness from kidney and throat trouble. The funeral was held at the Catholic Church in Napoleon Saturday the 28th, in the presence of a vast number of friends, the entire west end of Napoleon township turning out to do honor to the old settler. Thomas Kinney was born in Longford Co., Ireland, May 15, 1805. In company with his wife he emigrated to the United States and as emigrants generally did in that early day struck for the large cities. He worked at Albany some time but becoming dissatisfied moved to Cincinnati and still, later on in 1834 to Ft. Wayne where he worked on the Miami & Erie Canal. As the work progressed he struck Napoleon township and, liking the country, settled on his present farm 47 years ago. It was chiefly through the hardy labor of himself and wife, who has long since preceded him in death, that 224 acres of primeval forest has been developed into one of the finest farms in the county. He leaves three children: John Kinney, Mrs. Ellen Laughlin, and Mrs. E. T. Barnes, the former two living in Napoleon township, the latter in Napoleon.
