Obituary: Last Tuesday evening, about 6 o'clock, Freddie Honeck, aged about 9 years, son of Otto Honeck, in company with his brother Arthur, aged 6 years, went to the canal, got a small rowboat, and started for the Hoop Factory to get some hoops for the purpose of buiding a hennery. Freddie on getting into the boat picked up a board and substituted it for an oar, standing about the center of the boat, and his little brother sitting behind him. They had not gone far when he undertook to cross over to the float of logs; the boat was going at a slow speed, and he not paying particular attention to how close he was to the logs, all of a sadden the boat struck them, throwing him out sideways. His little brother at once called to George Walters, who was working a short distance down the canal, but he not knowing what had happened did not respond at once, but on seeing people running started; little Arthur being so excited he could not at first tell what happened. By this time a crowd of willing hands were present, and soon were in the water searching for the drowned boy. Wm. Theek, one of the rescuers, stepped on the body about 8 feet from the shore; the body was brought to the surface but life was extinct, having been in the water about half an hour. All sympathize with the heart broken parents in this their hour of sorrow. The funeral will take place to-day. |
