Obituary:

HOCKMAN -- May 29th, 1885, after an illness of some five weeks, Mrs. Mary Hockman, wife of the late Joseph Hockman, aged 74 years, 3 months, and 25 days.

Thus it again becomes our sad duty to chronicle the death of another one of the pioneers of Damascus township, this county. She was born in Fairfield county, Ohio, and, at an early day, in company with her husband, emigrated to the wilds of Henry county, O. The deceased was a member of a family consisting of fourteen children, ten of whom preceded her to the spirit land. I will not attempt to eulogize the life and character of one so justly and highly esteemed. Possessed largely of that element of kindness, sweetened by calm and affable disposition, she was endeared by all with whom she associated. She was known in the community by the familiar title of Aunt Polly. Only a little more than one year ago, the companion of her youth was called from her fond embrace; since which time she apparently let go her hold to earth, and, although kind children did what they could to make life pleasant and happy for her, the world to her had lost its charms and heaven gained her.

While nearing the River, the writer was permitted to visit this afflicted pilgrim and hear her express her confidence, strong and unshaken by the waves of affliction or near approach of death, gaining a complete victory over the last enemy, through the atonement of Christ, her Savior. Let infidelity boast, or Ingersollites ignore the hope of the Christian, or attempt to discard the truths of Revelation, but "Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like His."

Tears will fall as we remember
That loved form now cold and dead,
For no more you'll join our number--
Far from earthly scenes you've fled.
Weep not, children, in that country
Where the toils of life are o'er,
You may meet a sainted mother,
Safe upon the golden shore.

Rev. J. V. Myers. McClure, O., June 6, 1885.
