Obituary: Ida, daughter of George and Nancy Herkimer, died Aug. 21, 1872, of diptheria, aged 7 years, 4 months and 5 days. Joseph, son of the same, died Aug. 26, of the same disease, aged 2 years, 11 months and 1 day. George, the father and husband, died Dec. 24, 1872, of dropsy of the heart, aged 44 years, 11 months and 1 day. Myrtle, daughter of the same, died Jan. 24, 1873, of congestion of the lungs, aged 1 year and 4 months. Thus hath Mrs. Herkimer, in a few short months, been deprived of three children and a husband, whose loss to her is great and her affliction severe. We deeply sympathize with her. Mr. Herkimer had recently sold his farm near Napoleon and purchased near White House; but his anticipation of his new home was suddenly cut off, and the afflicted wife, with her four surviving children, go to the new home sad and alone. Mr. Herkimer died in full faith of a better life beyond the grave; was an active member of the Disciple Church, and figured largely toward the erection of a church building about four miles northwest of town. He moved to Napoleon township in 1863, and labored hard to maintain a large family, the half of whom his neighbors have carried to the tomb. He left an aged mother, a brother, three sisters, a wife and children to mourn his early departure. |
