Still Another Horrible Accident
Cremation of a Young Man
On Friday last Coroner Cloud received information that a man bad been burned to death in the woods near Elery. Upon repairing to the place the Coroner found that on the night before a young man, named Squire C. Edwards, about 19 years of age, had been burned up, together with his shanty, in the woods about a quarter of a mile from Elery.
It was the intention of young Edwards and his brother to chop wood in the vicinity, and for that purpose had built a shanty in the woods, which they had just completed, and Thursday night was the first time it was occupied, Squire occupying the shanty alone. Friday morning the brother visited the place ready to go to work, and to his horror found nothing but the smoldering embers of the shanty and the charred remains of his brother among the ruins.
The body was horribly burned, and nothing remained but the trunk. The Coroner held an inquest, and had Dr. Maerker examine the body, who found no wounds upon it, thus exploding the report that the young man had been murdered and his shanty set on fire.
The shanty contained a cook stove and a bunk, and it is surmised that fire was communicated to the building from the stove and young Edwards smothered by smoke before be could awake and make his escape. The deceased was a young man well thought of, unmarried, and a son of Mr. Samuel Edwards, better known as the Ohio Hunter. The accident cast a deep gloom over the community in the vicinity of Elery.
