Obituary: Major E. S. Dodd, of Toledo, a former resident of this city, died at the home of his mother-in-law on Saturday morning last. The Bee in speaking of his death says: Major Ezra S. Dodd is dead, the event occurring this morning at the residence of Mrs. Acklin, 1716 Adams street. He was aged 49 years. Probably no man in Toledo was better known than Major Dodd. He always took an active interest in public affairs, political and otherwise, and his friends were numerous. The Major was born in Adams county. Ohio, and his early education was obtained in the public schools. Subsequently he attended Grosse Isle Academy, Michigan and Logan college, and eventually matriculated at the Middle Temple Inns, London, Eng. He selected the profession of Journalism, and was the publisher of the Toledo Democrat and Columbus Statesman for some years. Major Dodd entered the army when quite a youngster, and retired at the close as major of the One Hundred and Eighty-fourth Ohio regiment of volunteers. His comrades said of him that he was a good soldier. In public life the deceased was a Democrat of the most pronounced type, and occupied many positions of trust councilman, member of the board of education, prosecuting attorney of the county and represented this district in the Ohio senate. He was for years a vestryman at Trinity church and was a member of Rubicon lodge, P. and A. M., and Forsyth post, G. A. R. Mrs. Dodd is now at Guthrie, Oklahoma, and until the lady is heard from funeral arrangements cannot be determined. Major Dodd, in 1889, removed to Oklahoma, where he was a victim of a stroke of paralysis. Last June he returned to Toledo on a visit, hoping the change of climate would help him, but it did not, and he continued to fail until his death this morning. |
