Obituary: Death of H. W. Dodd. Word reached here today of the death of Henry Wood Dodd, at Alirona. Mr. Dodd suffered for months from a tumor in the throat. Henry Wood Dodd enlisted in battery H of this city, in October; 1861, and served nearly two years with that company. In the spring of 1863 he was appointed scout at the headquarters of the army of the Potomac. His was a life full of activity and interest. He recaptured the notorious Dick Turney, the turnkey of Libby prison. At the close of the war he went to the West with his brother, Lieut. Col. Dodd, of the regular army, and for years' served as an Indian scout. He was a cousin of Maj. Dodd, of this city, and was a member of the famous Dodd family. He lived four years in this city, and was at the breaking out of the war a clerk in the Toledo National Bank. The Blade Henry Wood Dodd was born in Henry Co., a son of Gen. Dodd, who resided at Damascus and owned what is now the Lutz farm. Ever since the war he has been on the frontier most of the time, employed by the Government as a scout. He was with the famous Hayden expedition to the southwest in '66, and was chief scout under Custer in the fight on the Wachita, against the Comanche and Kiowas in 1867. |
