Obituary: New Bavaria News. Again we are called upon to chronicle the demise of one of our earliest pioneers. We refer to the death of Mrs. C. Desgranges, Sr., which recently took place at the home of her son Christian Desgranges in Defiance county. The estimable old matron had attained the ripe old age of 84 years. She and her husband, Christian Desgranges, Sr. came here from Zweibricken in the Rhenish Palatinate, in 1840 settling on the Ridge, on what is now the Laubenthal place. Here they erected their cabin miles away from their nearest neighbor and together underwent all the hardships, privations and sufferings of early pioneer life. Her family was large at that time, and to provide for its great multiplicity of wants, not to say comforts, required a mother of more than ordinary ability under the existing circumstances and incidental to early pioneer life. But she was in each respect equal to the task imposed upon her. In 1858 she lost her helpmate, the partner of her joys and sorrows, and from then on continued to reside with her son Christian. She leaves several children, three of whom are Daniel and Peter Desgranges, and Mrs. Chas. Hornung, who reside In this township, besides 48 grandchildren, 12 great grand children and hosts of friends all whom deeply mourn their loss, but rejoice in the thought that she has arrived at her destination on earth, and has now entered the city of everlasting light where all is joy and bliss. |
