Obituary: Death of Gen. Thomas S. Cunningham The Mercer (Pa.) Whig of March 29th, announces the death of Gen. THOMAS S. CUNNINGHAM, of that borough, in the 62d year of his age. Gen. C. located in Mercer in the year 1813, and during the first ten years of his residence there, devoted himself exclusively to the practice of the law, and earned the reputation of an honest and able lawyer, as well as safe and reliable counsel. In 1825 Gen. C. was elected to the Legislature of that State, and was reelected successfully for the next seven years, when he was elected to the Senate. At the close of his second year, he was elected Speaker of that body, a post which he filled with ability and to the entire satisfaction of his fellow members. He was also a member, and took a prominent part in the deliberations of the Convention which framed the present Constitution of that state. As a man and a citizen, nothing that can be said will add to the love and respect entertained for Gen. Cunningham by his fellow citizens. A kinder or better heart never beat in the breast of a man -- one more disinterested or free from selfish motives. He ws kind to all -- insolent to none; and his old and intimate friends will cease to cherish his memory only with life. /signed/ T. S. CUNNINGHAM MORRISON |
