Obituary: DIED - Near Damascus, Henry county, Ohio, on the 26th inst., AUGUSTUS COWDRICK, in the 19th year of his age. His health had been failing for more than a year. About the 1st of March last, it became evident that Consumption had marked him for its victim, since which time he failed rapidly and suffered much -- being entirely confined to his bed for eleven weeks before his death. In February, 1856, he united with the Liberty Baptist Church. 'Tis natural for us to forget the faults of friends departed, and remember only their virtues; but may we not be permitted to record christian triumph in his conflict with the king of terror. During his sickness he talked freely concerning his hope -- was ever cheerful, and when it became too evident that he could not survive till fall -- a hope which he had cherished as that which would fully satisfy him. He did not murmur, but conversed freely on the subject of religion. For about three hours before he died, his speech failed, yet he was perfectly conscious. About twenty minutes before his spirit took its flight, while anxious friends and neighbors filled the room, he said: "Vain world, adieu. Is this death? Oh, I have prayed for it. I am now in the valley. Weep not for me, but rejoice -- I am going home -- you will miss my company, but do not weep." After closing his eyes a few moments to things earthly, he exclaimed: "Oh! Glorious tens of thousands do I see!" and extending his trembling hand, said: "Father, will you try to meet me in Heaven, and all the rest of you meet me there. Oh, Jesus my Redeemer, I see him ready to receive me." He said more, but his last words were: "Oh! God! Take me quickly thro', I suffer..." And then the quivering frame, the silence told us that the ransomed spirit had taken its flight, and we felt that the Angel of Death had been there. The christian can well exclaim: "Oh, death, where is thy sting, and thy victory, O, grave." |
