Obituary: The subject of the following, which we clipped from the Daily People, of Ft. Wayne, of March 25th, is a brother-in-law of Julia Burns, nee Julia Lannen, formerly of Napoleon: This morning word was received in this city that Wm. Burns, a brakeman on the northern division of the Grand Rapids railroad, between Cadillac and Grand Rapids, had been instantly killed while coupling cars. The accident occurred at a small station near Cadillac and up to the time of going to press no particulars could be obtained. Billy Bums was probably one of the best known young men in this city. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Burns, who live at No. 41 Williams street. The deceased fired on the Wabash road for about four years, and after leaving the services of that company removed to Pullman, Ills., where his brother, Edward Bruns [sic], occupied a high position, and through his influence secured a position in the plumbing department. During the last base ball season Billy played in the semi-professional Pullman club as catcher. At one time he traveled with the Fort Wayne Northwestern league team. About six months ago he returned to this city and then secured the position, which he held at the time of his death. |
