Obituary: OBITUARY. BATES. On May 1, 1883, at her residence in Freedom township, Henry county, O., Jane Bates, aged 59 years, 1 month and 14 days. Deceased was born in Pennsylvania, March 17th, 1824, and moved to Henry county in 1854, at which time their farm was an unbroken wilderness. Through years of toil and care they succeeded in building for themselves and family a pleasant home, but in 1872, the reaper death severed the brittle thread of life, and father Bates passed away in the triumph of a living faith in Christ. Mother Bates joined the United Brethren in Christ about 12 years ago. Since that time she has been a devout member. As a mother she was always at her post, as a Christian true to the Church and ever held up the banner of Christ, especially was she engaged in behalf of the conversion of her children and friends, so anxious that in both prayer and class meetings her prayer would go up to God for their conversion. Not only will these children miss their mother but all who knew her mourn their loss. But our loss is her eternal gain. Thus has God in his divine providence taken from our midst this loved Mother;. yet we hope to meet again in that world where parents and children never part. May the Lord help the children to follow the pious example of their mother and make as she often prayed "an unbroken family around our Father's throne on high." E. C. |
