Obituary: Friday, May 24th. Mahlon Batdorf, a young man aged about 16 years, son of John Batdorf, of Damascus, was grinding com in the saw mill owned by his father, and while attempting to stop the mill by the use of a lever, the lever broke and precipitated his body directly upon the water wheel which was still in motion. He was immediately caught between the cogs of it and the wheel of the main shaft and his body so horribly mangled and crushed that he lived but two and a half hours after he was extricated from his horrible situation. Mahlon was a young man of good habits, industrious and kind and respected by all. The shock to his bereaved parents can only be fully comprehended by those who have been called upon to share the same sorrow. His parents have the sympathy of the entire community. Funeral services the following Sunday conducted by Rev. Spencer. |
