Obituary:

OBITUARY. BARR. Entered into rest July 6th, 1883, John Barr, aged 79 years, 4 months and 10 days. Deceased was born in the State of Pennsylvania on the 26th day of February, 1804. In the same year his parents moved to Fairfield county, O. where his youth and early manhood was passed. In the year of 1846 he moved to Defiance county, O., and settled near Ridgeville Corners, which was then an almost broken wilderness With the sturdy hand and indomitable will characteristic of the pioneer he set about clearing up a farm, and as year by year passed away, the mighty forest was laid low and fields of waving grain had taken its place. In the year 1868, he moved to Florida, Henry county, O., where he has since resided. About the year 1829 he was married to Barbara La Motte, of Fairfield county, O., with whom he lived happily about 21 years when death entered the family circle and laid his icy hand upon the loved wife and mother. By this marriage he was the father of 9 children, 4 sons and 5 daughters. Two daughters died in infancy, all the others are still living, useful and respected members of society, He had 32 living grandchildren and 12 deceased. He had also 4 grandchildren. [as written] Nearly 25 years ago he was again married to Mrs. Mary Miller, of Henry county, O. who now mourns the loss of one with whom she has passed nearly 25 years of wedded happiness. Nearly a quarter of a century have they shared the joys and borne the sorrows of life. Together they have borne their mutual burdens daily learning that life is not made up all of sunshine nor all of shade. A high tribute of respect was paid his memory by a stepdaughter on the night of his death; she said, "there never in the world was so good a step-father, always kind and gentle to all his step children, of whom there were 6, 5 daughters and one son. The son and one daughter, Mr. George Lowery and Mrs. Ellen Wilson now deceased. Always when they came home no matter when nor how often, or how many, a father's welcome was heartily given. There could certainly be no better step-father than he had been. It might also be said that all who knew him were his friends. No one was his enemy, men, women, and children all had a good word for grandpa Barr. An active busy useful life has been his. He hid lived the three score years and ten allotted to man, and but a few short months more would have completed the decade that rounded the full four score. He has enjoyed health the greater part of his life and possessed of an iron like constitution he retained much of his early vigor and activity up to about two years ago, when he began to experience trouble with cancer in the face of which there were two, one on the side of his nose and on the cheek. Many remedies were tried to effect a cure, but all to no avail. His afflictions for the past eight months have been most acute but were borne with remarkable patience and fortitude, he has lived at peace with the world and ere death claimed him as his own, this peace was made with God. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, July 7th, at the M. E. Church at this place conducted by Rev. J. T. Pope, Pastor from the 90th psalm and 10th verse. After service the remains followed by a large concourse of relatives and friends, were taken to Ridgeville and laid by the side of the wife of his youth. Requiescat In Pace.
