Obituary: Death of Jacob Bales. "Jacob Bales is dead." This was the remark that caused a look of surprise to take possession of faces and a chill of horror to creep over the bodies of citizens on the streets last Thursday morning. Inquiry after the facts revealed that it was only too true. Mr. Bales was engaged in rolling a field when the storm of Wednesday afternoon arose. His team became frightened and unmanageable and he was evidently jerked in front of the heavy roller which passed over his body breaking both shoulder bones, crushing the left ribs, breaking them loose from the breast bone, and otherwise severely bruising him He was able to get up however, and walked nearly a hundred yards but died soon after reaching the house. Mr. Bales was one of the old settlers of Henry county, having moved here from Stark county, this State, about forty years ago, settling on the farm he was tilling at the time of his death, but which was at that time a dense forest. He was married twice and leaves a widow and a large circle of children to mourn his loss. He has long been recognized as one of the substantial farmers of the county and he will be sorely missed. His funeral occurred at the M. E. Church on Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. M. L. Donahey and the Masonic fraternity, and his remains were followed to their last resting place by a large concourse of relatives and friends. |
