D. A. R. Program
The Elijah Gunn (Henry Co.) Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution was formed in 1975. The purpose is to promote patriotism, history, and to educate. It is possible to prove both ancestors who served and those who helped the soldiers during the war, which may be unknown to some researchers and which expands the possibility of finding/proving your family. A 3-Vol. Patriot Index lists known Revolutionary ancestors.
Looking Ahead…
Plan to travel with us to Defiance on Sunday, September 16th, to hear a program by Richard Rozevink on “Winchester Camp Three: The Horrible Winter of 1812-13,” as part of the commemoration of the 200th Anniversary of the the War of 1812.

BRUBACH,REISER
In search of more information about Richard Lloyd Reiser, b. 19 Dec 1922 d. 24 July 1924. He was the infant child of Tillie Brubach and would have been my cousin. I have courthouse vouchers that say he was treated at Heller Memorial Hosp. at Napoleon, casket and services provided by Boyer Funeral Home, signed by R. H. Walker, and railroad fare to Illinois for burial. Records from the hospital and funeral home do not go back to 1924 and I have been unable to find a birth or death record. Who was his father, what was the cause of death and why isn’t there a death certificate? Is there anyone in the Reiser family who might have any info about this child hidden in their family records? This has been an ongoing search of mine for over 25 years and any information would be welcome.

Family Book Donated
“The Volkmanns From Hannover to America” has been donated to the Edwin Wood Memorial Library. It was written by Richard Lynn Volkman, the great-grandson of Hans Heinrich and Catharina Volkmann.
Helpful Information Sent to Society
We have received copies of the high school transcripts of Mildred ORTHWEIN and Burl SPROW in 1917 and 1918. The originals are held by the Defiance College. Anyone wishing to see them or get a photocopy is welcome to contact us or the college.
It is interesting to note some of the subjects that were covered: Caesar, Virgil, Botany, Agriculture, Latin, Zoology, American and World History, Geography, several mathematics courses, English and Literature courses, and Civics. Not a bad curriculum for Damascus and Richfield Township schools!
Former Member
We were saddened to learn of the death of one of our members, Maurice Weaks. Maurice has served as an officer and before poor health intervened, he was an active member of HCGS. His wife, Arvis, is also a member. Maurice died May 2, 2012 at the age of 86. He was also active in Scouting and his church and served in the Marines. A memorial in the form of a book is planned by the society.
Anna Maria ORT – an example of an obituary translated from Der Defiance Herold ca. 1907
In the residence of her son, Heinrich ORT in south-Richland on Tuesday morning of this week at 9 o’clock, the widow Anna Maria ORT died after an extremely lengthy illness at the age of 83 years, 3 months, and 14 days.
Anna Maria ORT, born OTT, first saw the light of day on the 8th of April 1824 in Wittenberg, Germany. With the permission of her parents, she in the year 1837 came to America as a thirteen year old girl with her uncles Georg and Heinrich and her grandfather DIRR and settled with them in Pleasant Township a mile west of New Bavaria, where now Georg and Jakob DIRR live. That area was at that time a true wilderness, in which deer, bears, wolves and other wild animals made their home. Indians were not a rarity. They often visited with the whites, now and then brought along bear meat, which the whites prepared and then the white and red men peacefully shared the meal.
On the 2nd of March 1840 Miss Anna Maria OTT married Johann Heinrich ORT, who had a small tailor shop in Defiance on Jefferson Street, there where the deceased Peter CORESSEL’s residence stands. In December 1841 the ORT couple moved to Richland Township to a property of 40 acres of land. With the ax, they cleared a path by themselves to the spot, where they erected a small log cabin. There they worked industriously to clear the land, while in between they made many suits (of clothing) for customers in the Defiance area, since in the early years only so was there any money. From year to year their lot improved, and just when better days appeared, on the 24th of February 1862 the husband died and left to the ailing widow a large brood of children, of whom the youngest was only two and a half years old.
Even so, the widow did not lose her courage, but prayed to God, that He would support her children until they were grown. And her prayer was heard beyond her wildest hope and belief, as she was able to see not only her children grown, but also to hold grandchildren and great-grandchildren on her lap. She and hers have never known want. Her elder days were carefree, even though the mortal body became frail. What had been laid on her as a cross, she bore patiently and with trust in God. As a girl she had joined the Lutheran church and remained, fighting the good fight and holding fast to her beliefs, in sincere communion with the same until her passing. The many visits during her last illness and the many expressions of sympathy from her many friends were a visible joy to her.
Of the nine children whom Mrs. ORT gave life, the daughters Katharine and Wilhelmine, as well as the son Adam, have died. The surviving children are Heinrich and Georg ORT in South-Richland, Wilhelm ORT and the widow Maria DAVIS in Defiance, John K. ORT in Rialto, CA, and Mrs. John E. SCHATZ in Lutherville, AR. Besides these in direct descendants are 26 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren included.
Ken Thompson Translations for German Scrapbooks at Library
Several years ago a three-volume set of family scrapbooks was donated to our society. The items were cut from at least one German-language newspaper from this area, but not dated or otherwise identified. It is believed the articles came from Der Defiance Herold (1895-1920) and included items regarding families in western Henry Co. and in Twps. transferred to Defiance Co. Ken Thompson is translating the items for us. An index will be printed as each is finished.

Some regiments are given and a few companies, but most entries carry no designation. Amounts paid vary, usually from $4 to $20 and are paid to a township clerk for distribution. As names were added through the year, they were added to this list. Some people were dropped when they received a federal pension.
