Those of us who regularly work with the mail sincerely thank the members who use their membership numbers when corresponding. It saves us a lot of time.
WE ARE PUBLISHING. . .
Northwest Signal Obituaries 2001 The cost is $12 plus $2.00 postage and handling.
Towns and Ghost Towns of Henry County 1794 – Present The cost is $5.00 plus $1.50 postage and handling.
RECORDS + PREPARATION = SUCCESS
It’s September! We will be visiting the new records room of the Clerk of Courts office which is located in the basement of the building next to the courthouse. While some of the old volumes of records will be available for us to search (or for Mrs. Sonnenberg to search for us), the indexes are housed in the Clerk of Courts office in the courthouse. It is advisable for you to make a trip to Napoleon before September 16 and list the Volume and Page of any specific case you will want to look at during our meeting.
DIRECTIONS: Park at attorney Ed Peper’s office (555 Monroe, behind the courthouse) or at J & B Feed, walk up between the brick building and Omni Electric, take the stairway to the door. This route will be marked for us. We wilt have a business meeting at 7:00 and will be able to stay until 8:00 or a little later.

QUERIES
STEVENSON, MARQUIS
Searching for descendants of Presbyterian minister Rev. Joseph Stevenson and his wife Sarah Marquis Stevenson, dau of Rev. Thomas Marquis and his wife Jane PARK. Partial list of descendants’ names: TOMLINSON, BYERS, EAGLESTON, MOORE, McCOMB, MILLER COOMBS, HATCHER, SMITH, GILMORE, ARMER/ ARMOUR, GARVER, JACKSON, ZOZ, and COOVER.
—Ron Zoz, Marjorie Brundage, Lakeview, OH 43331
Editor’s note: We do not usually print queries without a specific Henry County reference. I did make an exception this time because Rev. Stevenson probably served many parishes and, I assume, had a Henry County connection as we were recipients of an invitation to a Family Information Exchange to be held Sept. 19 at Bellefontaine, OH. Anyone interested may contact the persons listed above.
This query appeared in the OGS Genealogy News (July-Aug. 2002):
SCHNEIDER, YOUNG, ZIEGLER, LIVINGSTONE
Catherine Mary SCHNEIDER, b 11 July, 1882, Custar, OH, bapt 3 July, St. Louis Church, Wood Co., OH. Parents were Adam and Catherine YOUNG SCHNEIDER. Where were parents born? Children of Adam & Catherine: Jossie, Mary and Catherine. Jossie m. Peter ZIEGLER of Deshler and Mary worked in the Deshler Hotel before moving to Helena, MT with her husband, Jack LIVINGSTONE. —Gloria Young, 1802 Hall St., Holt, MI 48842-1712
This is your space. We print all queries that come to us and are related to Henry County. Send queries to Henry Co. Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 231, Deshler, OH 43516 or to the editor at: Henry County Genealogical Society Newsletter.
HELP FOR HENRY CO. GRAVE HUNTERS
Linda Bleschke, Napoleon, OH read many of the Henry County cemeteries in the 1970s. This was before the HCGS was formed and several years before we read and published cemetery information. Linda believes she may have some information from stones that have since been destroyed, moved, or have simply become illegible. She also cross-checked her information with Henry Co. death records.
ADDING TO THE COLLECTION
The Henry County Genealogical Society has received two donations which can be found in our collection at the Edwin Wood Memorial Library in Deshler, OH.
Audrey H. Cosper has contributed “A Blade of Steel” which is about William Henry HARMAN and his descendants (342 page book).
We received from Marguerite Diemer Schosler a pamphlet (7 pages, both sides, family and generation charts): John Peter DIEMER, 1822 Bavaria 1890 New Bavaria, Henry County, Ohio.
From The Deshler Flag, May 17, 1901:
“One of the liveliest camps of fishermen along the [Maumee] river is that of the Deshler boys, located on the south side, along Beaver Creek. The party is made up, or was Sunday, of Dr. GEHRETT, Fred GILCHRIST, L. BAUGHMAN, F. H. FRANCKE, John ADAMS, Sam McCRORY, Peter WITHAM. Harry RIKE, O. LANG, Horace DUNN, M. H. DARBY and Mose COATES. Bass, pickering, and channel cats are being taken in reasonable quantities, and the boys are quite happy.”
From The Deshler Flag March 9, 1900:
“John OLESON, of McClure, died suddenly at Cadillac, MI last week. His remains were brought home for burial.”
From The Deshler Flag March 19, 1897:
“The $25,000 damage case of Herman GUELDE, the Hamler shoemaker, against Drs. ARCHER and EGER, of Holgate, has been revived again in the Henry County Court, a case of malpractice.”
From an Old Clipping in my files (sorry, not identified):
“Got a toothache? To get rid of it, try spitting into a frog’s mouth, kissing a donkey or strangling a mole. Those are some of the superstitions valued by our early ancestors, according to the Chicago-based Academy of General Dentistry. These cures have fallen into disfavor now along with the one that suggested rubbing your face with cow manure.”
It says one of the most adventurous methods of abolishing tooth pain called for obtaining a tooth from a murdered man or executed criminal and applying it to the aching tooth in a graveyard at midnight under a full moon.
Our ancestors lived hard lives, didn’t they?
68th OHIO VOLUNTEER INFANTRY
From The Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio in the War of the Rebellion 1861-1866 Vol. V.
The 68th was organized in Nov. and Dec. 1861 at Camp Latty, Napoleon, OH and mustered out July 10, 1865 at Louisville, KY. Due to the huge amount of information, only the soldier’s name, his company, rank, age and pertinent information such as being wounded or killed is included here. Note that being detached to a colored regiment does not mean that a soldier was black. Colored regiments had white officers.
