WE ARE PUBLISHING…

The Henry County Genealogical Society is publishing Henry County Birth Records Vol. I. 1867-1877. This has an every name index of over 10,000 names. Cost is $10.00 plus $2.00 postage and handling.

FAMILY LIFE FAIR

The Family Life Fair will be held at St. Paul School in Napoleon on Nov. 21, 1998 from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Lucille Van Scoyoc is chairman of the committee to attend and display the books we have for sale. We will be encouraging people who are interested in tracing their ancestors to join our society. If you are able to help, please contact Lucille. The Fair was lots of fun last year, so plan to stop by.

SURNAMES AND FIRST FAMILIES

If you have not submitted a list of surnames you are researching, please do so as soon as possible. We ask that you limit your list to the 16 surnames you are most interested in. The editor will be busy grandmothering soon after Christmas and would like to start on the list for the January newsletter as soon as possible. (Isn’t it nice to add generations to your chart?)
Another project to consider is applying for First Families status. Our deadline is in April, so write for an application and start getting your information together now. If your ancestors were in Henry County before 31 December 1870, you are eligible for Gold; if they were here before 31 December 1885, you are eligible for Silver.

QUERIES

ELLING, ORDWAY, DELPH
Researching the Johann Freedrich Elling family which came to the US in 1859 and settled in Henry Co.
Researching the family of Richard and Sarah J. Ordway who settled in and near Malinta, OH. His grandson Lemuel was my great-grandfather and his son Harrison my great-great grandfather. I think Harrison’s father was Aaron, but am having difficulty finding information from PA to link these.
Phillip Delph settled in Henry Co. near Malinta with his wife Elizabeth. Family lore says he came with the Phillip Heckler family from PA and that he was adopted.

NATURALIZATION RECORDS

About two years ago I was allowed to copy several books of naturalization records found in the Clerk of Courts office in the courthouse. These included “Declaration of Intention”, “Petition for Naturalization”, and “Certificate of Naturalization” records. Sometimes included in these records is a physical description, wife, children (possibly their ages), place of foreign residence, place of current residence, and arrival date and port. Margaret Kelly has now abstracted the genealogical information from these records and I have published it in this and past newsletters. More information is available on most persons listed. No one seems to know why these volumes were not in the Probate Court Records, which is where most of the naturalization records are kept. –Karen Sunderman.
