MEGA PURCHASE

HCGS has just purchased 36 rolls of microfilm of the Northwest Signal. These have been placed in the Deshler Edwin Wood Memorial Library. This includes issues of the paper from April 26, 1961 to August 31, 1973. The previous papers are also available on microfilm at the library. (And you wondered what we did with our profits from book sales!)

NOW AVAILABLE at the Deshler Edwin Wood Memorial Library is an alumni list of students from HAMLER HIGH SCHOOL. It is cross-referenced by year of graduation, name, and maiden name. Thanks to Paul Zachrich for compiling this! (If you’re in charge of alumni lists from another school, we’d like to have more.)

IS THIS YOUR FAMILY?

I am now on a Mellott family “share group” on the internet. Some of the members are researching the Pittman family. Recently I found a female Pittman b. 2 Apr 1868 in the Henry County Birth Records Vol. I. I put out the information and received a reply with her parents and siblings. If anyone is researching this family, I will send on a complete copy of the family line. Susanna (GIDLEY) b. 1838, d. 1928 m. 1856 Levi PITTMAN b. 1830, d. 1886 (both bur. Hockman Cemetery) and ch: Charles, Althea Elizabeth, Alfred, George, Lucia May, Nora, and Sarah.

RESEARCH TIPS

We read recently about a product called PEC-12 which is supposedly available from most camera shops. It will clean the “goo” from old photos. Just spray a little on a soft cloth and gently rub. It is an archival substance and will not harm prints or film.

If you have trouble with “bleed-through” when copying or scanning documents on thin paper, put a piece of dark paper behind the original. This will help to minimize ghost characters from the back of the original.

–Thanks to Phyllis LaRue for these tips from the March-April 1997 issue of the Florida Chapter, OGS, Inc. Newsletter.

From The Henry County SIGNAL, 17 July 1879

Mr. and Mrs. James SHAY request us to return their kindest acknowledgements to Mr. D. HANCOCK, leader, and the Napoleon Band, for the fine Serenade given them on Mon. evening, in honor of their marriage.
(MARRIAGES) SHAY – WILSON–On Sunday, July 13th, 1897 by G. H. REEDER, J. P., at the residence of Dr. H. MCHENRY, Mr. James SHAY and Miss Annie S. WILSON, all of Napoleon.
Mr. SHAY is Engineer of the Napoleon Fire Steamer, and it was supposed that it was his wife, sweet-heart and sister, from the amount of care and attention he gave it. But it appears that he had time to woo and win one of Napoleon’s fair daughters, and now has a second charmer to lavish his attentions upon. Mr. SHAY is a good Engineer, and we trust he will make a good husband to his young wife, and that their passage down the stream of time may be both pleasant and tranquil, and that happiness in no ordinary degree may be theirs to the end.
Thomas ALLISON, a young man raised by John HAMLER, Esq. of Hamler, was brought to Napoleon last week, by the officers, charged with having broken in to the house of Mr. M. JUNIC near that point, with the intention of committing robbery, and with having attempted the murder of Mr. JUNIC by striking him over the head with a broken iron car ring. He had a hearing before G. H. REEDER, Esq., who held him for his appearance at the next term of the Henry Co. Common Pleas Court in the sum of $1,000. Failing to give it, he was placed in charge of Sheriff DAUM, for safe keeping until that time. ALLISON was taken from the Reform Farm by Mr. HAMLER and adopted by him, making the third boy of that kind that he had raised and cared for, and this is the only one of the three that he has had any trouble with. Mr. HAMLER is one of our well known citizens, and highly respected by all who know him, and he is in no way responsible for the waywardness of the young man against whom the charge seems to be well founded.

DESHLER ITEMS:
