WE ARE INVITED TO A 4-COUNTY SEMINAR

Fulton and Williams County Genealogical Societies are planning a joint meeting Saturday, September 18. They have invited Henry Co. and Defiance Co. to attend. This will be held at Ruhly Park in Archbold. A “sale table” for each group to display and sell books will be available.
The main speaker will be Mary Bowman, OGS President. She will speak on two topics: Immigration and Naturalization Records and Using the IGI (International Genealogical Index, used by the Church of Latter Day Saints and recorded on microfiche. It lists a LOT of information.)

Topics for informal group discussions might include: computer genealogy, First Families of (respective counties), surname/ancestor list exchange (BRING YOUR SURNAME LIST), and military records. More information is available from Marilyn Clay, Delta, OH. No registration is required and there is no fee.

Schedule:
10:30-12:00 Informal sessions
12:00-1:00 Lunch break (bring a sack lunch or visit a fast food restaurant nearby)
1:00-2:00 Mary Bowman – Immigration

 QUERIES

NOIROT, ROYAL
I am looking for the village in France that my great great-grandfather came from. His name was Francis Noirot. Am also searching for info on Mary Beth Royal.
–Denny Royal, Casper, WY 82601

(I took this query over the phone and neglected to write down the year they came to Henry Co.)

LESNETT, RUSH, HODDY
Wish to correspond and exchange information on Lafayette Lesnett who married Charlotte G. Rush in 1860 and served in the Civil War from Henry County. Where did he go after the war? Did he have children? What happened to his first wife Ethylinda Hoddy of Marion Co., OH?
–Win Wood, Simi Valley, CA 93063-5715

James E. Punches, Green River, WY 82935-9605 has sent us a copy of his computer print-out on the Puches family history. It begins with (George) Peter Punches (Punch, Punches, Pontius, Ponches) b. 1785/6 PA, d. after 1860 Hancock Co., OH (?). m. Margaret Hager 22 June 1811 Pickaway Co., OH.

There are numerous descendants in Henry Co. and other states, some family members as far away as Alaska and Cyprus. James includes a current address list for Punches family members. He has graciously offered to allow us to reproduce it as we wish. It will be placed in the library. Information may be obtained from him or from our corresponding secretary.

DOING SOME FALL HOUSE CLEANING??

From time to time we have had inquiries about the German language newspapers that were once published in Henry County. A recent query leads us to BEG anyone who has copies of them to donate/loan them to the Genealogical Society so that we can extract information from them.

From The Deshler Flag 12 Mar 1942 I learned that the Henry County Democrat (Der Deutsche Demokrat?) was to suspend publication as of March 25, 1942. The paper was founded 57 years before, serving as “a news medium for settlers in this area newly arrived from the old country.” It was founded by J. H. Halterman and William Bente.

A Deshler family owns two scrapbooks which include some obituaries from this paper. They had the scrapbooks put on microfilm and that is available at the library (Miscellaneous Manuscripts, roll 1, MMS 1051). Unfortunately, the obits are not dated and are so difficult to read (for those not fluent in German) that it is sometimes impossible to even find the name of the deceased.

We now have an offer to translate what we have, but we would also like to preserve whatever remaining papers there are. Please help us if you can. Check your attic and basement, then check your mother’s and grandmother’s.

IMPORTANT REMINDER

November 15, 1993 we will recognize those people who have proved First Family ancestors in Henry County in the last year. They include: Geraldine Gorder Hoit, James Albert Ripke, George Rafferty, Hildegard Rafferty, and John Clark. Elizabeth Ann Walters did not receive notification in time to attend last year, so she will be honored again this year.

ANCESTRAL CHARTS BOOK, VOLUME II

We now have about half as many charts as we need to publish Volume II of Henry Co. Ancestor Charts. We would like to have all charts for this book sent in by January 1, 1994. Make your New Year’s Resolution NOW. Get them filled out and sent in.

ANOTHER GOOD SEMINAR

The Pemberville Public Library and the Wood County Chapter of OGS are sponsoring GERMAN ROOTS AND BRANCHES to be held at the Bethlem Lutheran Church, Cedar St., Pemberville, OH on October 2, 1993. Speakers are Arta F. Johnson on “Immigration in the 18th and 19th Centuries” and “Problems and Pitfalls in Research” and Kenneth L. Smith on “Confirming Your Ancestors Place of Origin” and “Writing to Germany.”

Checks for $11.00 (lunch included) can be made payable to the “Friends of the Pemberville Public Library” and mailed to: Laura King, Pemberville Public Library, 375 East Front St., Pemberville, OH 43450 by Sept. 24. Please list FIVE names for the printed surname exchange. (Please print.) Door prizes, displays, sales tables.

CIVIL WAR DISCHARGE RECORDS (CONCLUSION)

We conclude our listing of Civil War Discharge Records taken from Vol. 1 Soldier’s Discharge Records at the Recorder’s Office, Henry County Court House. The initials OVI refer to Ohio Volunteer Infantry; OVVI refers to Ohio Veterans Volunteer Infantry. Some additional information may appear in the courthouse records.

In the attestations accompanying the records it is not always clear whether the soldier resides in a town or township; for example, Napoleon. When two spellings are given for a name, one usually occurred in the index and the other in the record itself. Question marks indicate that is was not possible to read the handwriting. From The Henry County Signal dated August 21, 1895 (excerpt)

The reunion of the 68th O.V.I. was held in the town of Florida last Thursday. The town was decorated with the prettiest flag on earth and bunting without limit. The Methodist church was placed at the disposal of the regiment for its meetings and was adorned with flags, and the colors carried by the regiment during the war. A picture of Gen. Sherman caused the men to remark, “that looks just like Uncle Billy.”

The regimental flag was inscribed with the names of the thirteen most prominent battles in which the organization participated. The dinner was contributed by the good people of Florida. All the old officers were re-elected, viz: President, Simeon Gillis, Co. K, Bryan, OH; Secretary, Samuel Miller, Co. G, Pettisville, OH; Treasurer, L. W. Richardson, Co. G, Defiance, OH; Chaplain, Levi H. Brubaker, Co. F, Florida, OH. The next reunion will be at Holgate on the third Thursday of August, 1896.

There was no formal program, just short addresses, mostly in the form of experience talks made by members of the 68th. There was discussion of the best method of preparing an authoritative history of the regiment. The rolls showed that 169 of the old comrades were present. Of the Colonels only one was there, Geo. E. Wells of Toledo.

The 68th Regiment was organized in the state at large, in November and December 1861 and mustered out July 10th, 1865. Previous to its departure for the front, it encamped a short distance above Napoleon for some time. During its service there were over 2200 enrollments. Official reports (incomplete) showed 283 were killed or died of disease during the service.
