Dec. NO MEETING

FROM OUR PRESIDENT

One of the privileges of being president of an organization is representing that organization to the community. Recently I was asked to participate in the Henry County 4-H program as the judge of genealogy projects.

The judging took place on Wed., July 29 at the Senior Center in Napoleon, Oh. The projects were divided into Junior and Senior groups. Six girls were in the Junior division and three girls were in the Senior division. Best of class went to Sara Brubaker in the Junior division and to Kristen Panning in the Senior division. Each of the winners were invited to go to the Ohio State Fair and Kristen accepted the invitation.

All nine of the local projects were interesting and the girls were well informed on their family histories. I was glad to see that 4-H has included genealogy as one of its projects. I was also glad to see interest on the local level and hope genealogy is well represented at next year’s fair.

FUND RAISER, September 12, 9:00 pm

The Henry Co. Genealogical Society will be having a bake sale Sat. morning at 9:00 in front of the Corn City State Bank in Deshler, Oh. Members are asked to bring baked items to the bank shortly before 9:00, or they can be taken to the Library on Fri. afternoon. Donations of money will be accepted.

CEMETERY COMMITTEE

Good news to report! Bartlow and Marion Twps. are completed. Work has started on Richfield and Pleasant Twps. It was mentioned at the Aug. meeting that if you live near a cemetery and would like to copy it, just let the cemetery committee know and they will help you to get started. Several members have offered to copy cemeteries near them, and I am sure the work is moving right along. Just keep in touch with the committee as to what you are doing. Don’t forget the shaving cream–it works wonders!

It has come to my attention that several of our members are receiving their newsletters through the mail that have been torn or parts of them missing. If this happens please let us know and a new one will be sent to you.

The Henry County Genealogical Society is in need of a two drawer file cabinet. If anyone has one that they are no longer using and would like to donate it to the society or sell it for a nominal price, please contact Lucille VanScoyoc at the Library in Deshler.
The OHIO GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY has come out with the guidelines for their essay contest 1987-1988. The contest is open to ALL sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The parents of these students must belong to societies. Deadline for Chapter entries for Henry Co. is Feb. 15 1988. For more complete details and entry forms, contact Lucille VanScoyoc at the Deshler Library.

Katherine Yackee Kemm married William Kemm and lived on a farm on the east bank of the Maumee River, 4 miles south of Napoleon. Philip Yackee and his family lived on a farm in Flatrock Twp. on the banks of the Maumee. Are these two Yackees related, and if so, how? A couple of weeks ago I spent my weeks vacation doing research. My cousin from Detroit joined me, and on a Tues. afternoon we started off. We don’t like to waste our days driving so we spent a few hours at the library in Findlay, Hancock Co., Oh. until they closed. A lot of research material can be found there. On to Maple Grove Cemetery on the West side of Findlay, where we looked for and found several family plots and stones. After a couple of hours in drizzling rain and not enough light for the cameras, we headed to Columbus.

All day Wed. was spent at the Ohio State Library. An enormous amount of information is in the Genealogy Section, where you have free access to all of their publications and microfilm with a copier for your use, at only 10 cents a copy. A safe and secure parking lot is located about a block south of the library. $5 lets you park all day.

On Thurs. we were in Circleville, Pickaway Co. at the court house and library. Didn’t find a whole lot that we were looking for, so we headed to Hillsboro in Highland Co. While we are always gathering new information, we are also confirming information that we have picked up from various sources. Southern State Community College in Hillsboro has a very good genealogy section and we researched there till closing at 8:00. Seems like we are always the last ones to leave any place!

Fri. morning, after breakfast – yes, we do stop to eat sometimes and get gas – we started out for West Union in Adams Co. The road we chose, or, rather the only road, was a mistake so soon after eating we decided we didn’t need to go to Cedar Point for a roller coaster ride! The court house in Adams Co. burned and most of the records were destroyed. A lot of the early records have been reconstructed from wills, deeds and various other sources, including newspapers. Several people have put in a lot of time to find out this information and to put it into a printed source. They have a few of the original marriages, but not much is available for births and deaths until 1910.

These three county seats are all small towns and everyone we met was very friendly and tried very hard to help us. After leaving Adams Co. we made a mad dash to Washington Court House in Fayette Co., some 70 miles away, back over the roller coaster road. Along the way we found a cemetery we had been directed to. Down a gravel road to another less gravel road, back in a field where the lane was mostly sand (and it had rained during the night) through a gate that had to be opened and closed. But it was well worth it, since we found a long lost relative and her parents’ family. Now we have to find her husband that died twenty years prior. We did make it to Fayette Co. with 10 minutes to spare. Long enough to run into the court house and get a county map. Found a very good genealogy section at the library, till we were chased out again.

Sat. was spent at the OGS library in Mansfield, Oh. where again we had more than enough material at our disposal to go through. It does help if you make a list of things that you are looking for. One can waste a lot of time just browsing through books, hoping to find a certain thing, although that sometimes pays off. They have a large section of census and court records on microfilm, a large surname file, some with charts and a room full of printed family histories.

We returned to Findlay early Sun. afternoon and went back to Maple Grove Cem. This time it wasn’t raining! Stayed till 5:00 and found lots of family. Then back home to Deshler. A long week on the road, tiring and frustrating at times, but well worth it, and we are planning where to go next year!
