USING THE SOUNDEX

The soundex system of indexing census records uses the sounds within the name instead of the exact spelling. It is based on the first three consonants of the name. Names pronounded in a similar way are grouped together.

Soundex indexes exist for the 1880, 1900, 1910 and 1920 censuses. They are grouped by state, sorted by the Soundex code, and then listed alphabetically by surname and first name. They give the volume, sheet, enumeration district and line so that you can find the full record on microfilm.
