HELP FIND FAMILY GRAVES

I recently learned of a family who is currently creating a family cemetery on their land. Such graves may go unrecorded in our cemetery books. If you know of past or present family cemeteries, please write to tell us of their location. If possible, list the information on the stone(s).

CAREFUL: When you contract with a professional genealogist, be certain you both understand what information and time your are contracting for and whether more payment will be required. Also, be aware that some records simply don’t exist and will not be found, no matter who does the searching.

QUERIES

THIS IS YOUR SPACE — please send queries to Henry Co. Gen. Soc. , P.O. Box 231, Deshler, OH 43516 or to the editor at: Newsletter Editor.

SIXTEEN CHURCHES RESPOND

We sent out about 70 letters to the churches in Henry County. Of those only 16 responded, telling us what records (birth, death, marriage, baptism, etc.) they have and which ones would be open for public perusing and copying. Please ask your pastor or church historian if they have responded to us. If they haven’t, a few well-placed nudges might help us along. Also, encourage your church to have the records microfilmed.

NOTES AND NEWS

THE DESHLER FLAG 5 June 1958 — Tombstone Found On Ball Diamond — A fifty year old grave marker, which recently came up missing from Woodlawn cemetery, Deshler, was discovered by members of the Corn City Festival committee last Saturday eve, as they were inspecting part of the ball diamond at Memorial Field. The stolen grave marker had been placed on the pitchers mound, in the fenced off, newly seeded area of the ball diamond, which has not been played on this year.
Cemetery trustee Harry Jackson, was advised of the find and the marker was returned to its proper place. It was a small sandstone marker, erected about 1906. The theft was reported to Sheriff Fred Bartels.
The theft was thought to be not so much an act of outright vandalism, as a practical joke, in bad taste. In any event, such an act is punishable under state law.
By the way, the Society wishes The Flag a happy 125th anniversary in November!

Ohio Towns and Townships to 1900: A Location Guide has been published by the Ohio Genealogical Society. There are some errors concerning Henry County settlements, so this editor (K. S.) has been working on locating the various towns and “ghost” towns in our county. If you have information please write to me in care of the Henry Co. Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 231, Deshler, OH 43516. More information is available on most of these towns.

Farmer’s Directory, 1916
Deshler

The county was created in 1820, but not organized until 1834. As originally created it included almost all of what is now Fulton County and the western tier of townships in what is now Defiance County. For judicial purposes until 1824 the first few settlements at Napoleon, Flat Rock and Damascus (after the French who called the area Praire du Masque), were attached to Wood County, and from 1824 to 1834 to Williams County. Settlement was retarded by the swamp conditions which made travel and transportation nearly impossible, and discouraged cultivation. Insects, dampness, isolation, and the lack of sunlight in soil and soul had a depressing effect on health and happiness. Factors which eventually overcame these slow beginnings were: (1) the federal policy of early and systematic land survey into townships and sections (the county was first surveyed in 1821 and resurveyed in 1833); (2) the federal policy of sale in units as small as 30 acres for prices as low as $1.25 (there were land offices at various times at Piqua, Wapakoneta, Lima and Defiance); (3) the sturdy stock of Yankees, Yorkers and Germans (Penn. Dutch and European) whose fortitude, industry, ingenuity and frugality led them to level forests, drain swamps and survive the long drawn out pioneer crisis of loneliness, disease and austere living; (4) the opening of canal service between Toledo and Fort Wayne in 1843, and Toledo and Cincinnati in 1845; (5) the acceptance by the county of drainage as a public responsibility, thus releasing all lowlands from swamp conditions, assessing the costs on farmers in proportion to benefits, and enabling farmers to tile their own acres as much as necessary so as to dry and aerate the soil.
