December 1995, NO MEETING

Happy Holidays!

If anyone has information on the 100th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (Civil War), please contact Phyllis LaRue, address above. Thank you!

Valerie Petersen Schulze will be publishing the book on her ancestor, Andrew Altman, and his Civil War letters by the end of the year. These have been donated to the archives at Bowling Green State University and contain references to 160 Henry Countians.

NOTE: Our address is now P. O. Box 231, Deshler, OH 43516. PLEASE use the new address for all your correspondence — book orders, memberships, queries, and submissions.

WE ARE PUBLISHING ….

News of Our Men and Women in Uniform taken from The Deshler Flag 1941-1949. Over three hundred pages of letters from service men and women and lists of draftees/inductees from Henry County and the area. The letters and articles are from, and about, service personnel from the Deshler, Hamler, Custar, Belmore, Westhope, Hoytville, and McClure areas. Others included are from Malinta, New Bavaria, North Baltimore, and Deweyville. This is sold as a two-volume set, with all servicemen/ women’s names indexed. The cost of these books is $20.00 per set, plus $3.00 postage and handling. ALL BOOKS now may be picked up locally at Phyllis LaRue’s or Lucille VanScoyoc’s and are no longer for sale at the library.

A WORD CONCERNING THE BIRTH RECORDS

We have been including for over a year in our newsletter. These records are taken from the hand-written records in the Probate Office of the Henry County Court house. NR=Not Reported. The records are alphabetized by FATHER’S name since so many children’s names were not reported. Occasionally the father’s name was not reported, but the child’s was, so always check the N’s in case your ancestor is alphabetized under the “Not Reported” designation. Keep in mind that handwriting from that era is difficult to read and misspellings occur frequently. It is not unusual to have three spellings for the last name of the child, the father, and the mother. Other errors (especially sexual designation) are sometimes apparent, but the records are copied as exactly as possible. We hope someday to have enough for a book. Researcher on this project is Karen Sunderman.

SURNAMES

Each year we print a list of the surnames our members are researching in the January-February issue of the newsletter (hardcopy version only). Last year for the first time we limited this to 16 names per member because of space and mailing costs. If members did not send us their 16 names of most interest, I took the first 16 alphabetically from their previous list. It would be more beneficial to us all if each member sent the names they wish to appear in the newsletter.

SPEAKING OF WHICH …

When you fill out your new membership form, please note whether or not you are a member of the Ohio Genealogical Society. They have recently passed an amendment to their bylaws which REQUIRES every county society to have 15 members who are also members of the state society. Several of us protested this new ruling before it was passed because it is difficult for a relatively small county society like ours (usually 80-90 members per year, with many being out-of-state memberships) to maintain that number.

We still do not understand what will happen if we have 15 state memberships one year and only 13 the next, nor how the state society expects us to require our local members to become members at the state level, too. At any rate, please let us know if you are an Ohio Genealogical Society member. Also, if you would care to write the state society about this matter, the address is Mary L. Bowman, President, P. O. Box 2625, Mansfield, OH 44906-0625. Phone (419) 522-9077.

Benefits to the Henry County Genealogical Society as far as being a part of the Ohio Genealogical Society include the ability to get speakers at little or no cost. However, we have not found that they are always responsive to our needs. For instance, we have been trying for over a year to get them to change our mailing address. (A little editorial comment, there!)
