THOME

I am trying to find information on my ancestors with the last name Thome. I found a picture on the HCGS website with a Victorian farmhouse built in 1896, owned by Mathias Thome. If there is any way you can find me more information or documents on the Thome family, I would greatly appreciate it.

A Sign of the Times*

“It’s a sign of the times, we suppose. Civic and community organizations across the country are experiencing declining membership year after year. A troubled economy is certainly one reason. So, too, is the difficulty in attracting a younger generation willing (or able) to participate. Family obligations, hectic work schedules, and financial constraints likely dissuade some. But, the success of this organization is dependent upon a younger demographic to continue” the work we have begun.

From the start our goal at Henry County Genealogical Society was to locate and disseminate genealogical information related to Henry County. Times have certainly changed. Anyone interested in their family history can find information on the internet. It may or may not be accurate, however, and those of us who began our searches by (literally) digging through dusty old records at courthouses or walking through freezing weather in cemeteries to find original sources are growing fewer and fewer.

The first part of this article (enclosed in quotation marks) was not written about the Henry County Genealogy Society, but it may well have been. With one exception, our officers have passed the senior citizen designation. We operate with a handful of regular attendees. This is a fact, not an excuse. Those in the next generation are more involved with attending their children’s activities than examining the lives of their ancestors. And that’s not all bad, just an explanation of life today.

Our local membership has dropped dramatically from the first years of our existence. That doesn’t mean we are not still finding and publishing information on Henry County or answering queries as we receive them. It does mean that we have fewer people to serve as officers of our organization and fewer able hands to do the many projects we would like to see accomplished.

If you live in or near Henry County, we urge you to become an active member. If you live at a distance, we hope we can continue to serve your needs.

– The editor and Officers of HCGS

FINDING FAMILY IN GERMANY

Lori RABE ESCH, a member of HCGS, grew up in Freedom Twp. where her greatgrandfather, Frederick RABE cleared farmland and in 1872 built the farmhouse where she later lived. The only thing she knew about him was his birth date and the town in Germany where he was born. She e-mailed the Lutheran church in that town and amazingly they had his baptism record. Eventually, they put her in touch with Walter HOMANN, a researcher who traced the RABE line back to the early 1700’s. He then dug into her other lines: STOCKMAN, MOHRING, LUDEMAN, ARPS, SEEDORF and KOHNKE. Last September eight of her family members visited northwest Germany and the following is a translation of the newspaper article their visit engendered:

Giving the Long-Dead an Identity

Walter Homann Is a Passionate Genealogist / Data Search and Data Addiction

Walter Homann is addicted. Data-addicted. The Genealogist from Walsrode does passionate research on names and birth dates, facts and figures and puts them into a context. He created a pedigree of 3000 of his own ancestors, going back to the year 1532. During the last one and a half years, he was occupied with commissioned work: he did genealogy for a woman from Ohio who was unknown to him.

Walsrode. Lori Rabe Esch called the church office in Walsrode on Frb. 23,2013 searching for her ancestors. By a happy coincidence, Walter Homann was around overhearing that some staff traced Friedrich Wilhelm Rabe. Hearing that Friedrich Wilhelm Rabe’s mother was on her way from Verden to Stellichte riding a bike as her contractions fulminated and that she gave birth to Filius in Gross Heins, drew his interest.

Although the internet makes genealogy much easier, it was still like finding a needle in a haystack. The research made Walter Homann read old church records, visit other genealogists, travel to Stellichte, Newmuhlen, Bierde, Hudesmuhlen in Hodenhagen, Brockel and Fintel in Ronburg county.

His “intuition” told him to begin with taking a look at the confirmation records of the time. Not only did he find the name Friedrich Wilhelm Rabe, but even a remark on his mother Catherine Sophie Rabe who was born in Hilperdingen and baptized in Meinerdingen. “Next, I asked myself: where did her mother come from?”, says Homann who eventually tracked down the manor von Behr in Stellichte where aforesaid mother and father passed away in 1836.

By the way, the father was a shepherd. The trace lead him to the community of Steimbke (Neinburg county). “Church records were the source back then,” Homann explains, “only after 1875, bureaus of vital statistics came into existence.” It was in such a church record where he found the name Dietrich Heinrich Rabe—the shepherd who died in Stellichte—as well as a hint of his parents.

All’s well that ends well? Not for Walter Homann. He wanted to find out about what happened between his birth and death. Numerous old documents—but he lifted the secret. Deitrich Heinrich Rabe lived in Neumuhlen near Bierde, his occupation was shepherd, he was first married to a Margarethe Sophie Rumple and later to a Bertels from Eickeloh and moved to the former Kichspiel Hudelmuhlen.

Every day, Homann spent multiple hours in the “research-chamber” in his basement and seemed to be obsessed with the work. By the end of 2013, he had constructed a pedigree of the Rabe family comprising twelve generations and going back to 1744.

But Lori Rabe Esch has even more ancestors: a Ludemann as well as a Stockmann line. In this area these last names are almost as common as Meyer, Muller, Schmidt. But a data addict won’t be stopped by something like that. Walter Homann found out that the Stockmann line originally comes from Westenholz. The Ludemann line was more difficult to track down. As chance would have it, Walter Homann came across a promising marriage record. “I found a marriage entry saying that the father of a Ludemann who had married in Brockel, was the master smith. So, I went to the cemetery in Brockel. All of a sudden I saw this Ludemann smithy and Anita Ludemann opened the door.” The 79-year-old lady handed him a truly precious treasure—a complete list of ancestors of the Ludemanns including pictures and notes about houses that were still standing.

* By now the list of Lori Rabe Esch’s ancestors is complete. It comprises 1173 names—the result of (to be continued).

County Citizens (from History of Henry Countv Ohio by W. W. Campbell pub.1905)

William DAMMANN, a well-known farmer of Freedom township, living in section 15, was born on a farm in Adams township. Defiance County, this state, on December 10,1862, and is the son of Frederick and Annie (ROHRS) DAMMANN, natives of Hanover, Germany. The father was born in 1826 and died in 1897, while the mother, who was born in 1831, died in 1901. They were married after reaching this country and first located in this county, later going to Defiance County and purchasing 80 acres of land in Adams Township. Later they sold this and bought 100 acres in Freedom Township, Henry County, also buying 80 acres where the subject now lives, 80 acres in section 21, and 80 acres in Monroe Township, thus owning at the time of his death 340 acres. The old folks were Lutherans, the father being an officer of the church in Freedom Township. Their children were as follows: Henry, Frederick (deceased), William, Sophia.

The subject of this sketch was 10 years old when brought to this county and secured his education partly in the district schools and partly in the Lutheran parochial school of this township. He remained with his father until 27 years old, at which time he married and located on his present farm. Only about 25 acres of it were then cleared and few improvements made, but he went to work on its improvement, building first a small frame house, which was later superseded by his present fine story- and-a-half house. All of the land is now cleared excepting 20 acres, and the owner here carries on a general system of agriculture according to the most advanced methods. He is also the owner of 40 acres of land in Clinton Township, Fulton County, this state.

Mr. DAMMANN has been twice married, the first time, in 1889, to Miss Mary CARSTAN, a native of Germany, who died in 1892, leaving a daughter, Amelia. In 1892 Mr. DAMMANN married Miss Annie OELFKE, a native of this country and the daughter of Hemy OELFKE. They have five children, Maggie, Herman, Clara, May and George. In politics Mr. DAMMANN is a Democrat and is serving acceptably as a member of the school board. In religion he is a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Paul PETERSON, a prosperous farmer of Bartlow Township, is a native of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, where he was born on May 4,1861, the son of Matthias and Hannah (HANSEN) PETERSON. In 1874 the family emigrated to America, locating in Genoa, Ottawa County, Ohio, where they still reside.
The subject attended school in his native

and and also some in the schools of this country. He was employed in factories in Genoa until 1888, when he came to Bartlow Township, Henry County, Ohio, and bought 40 acres of land, mostly swampy and covered with timber. Though he at that time.knew nothing of farming, he went to work and cleared and improved the place until it became one of the really good farms of the township. He later added 20 more acres, and replaced the original log buildings with better ones, the large barn, 38 by 75 feet, being erected in 1901 and the present residence in 1896.

Mr. PETERSON married Miss Emma Louise FABER, also a native of Germany and the daughter of Benjamin FABER. The FABER family came to this country in 1878 and first settled in Ottawa County, Ohio, later removing to Genoa, where they now live. Five children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. PETERSON, namely: Margaretha; Herman, who was killed by lightning in 1898; Matthias; Benjamin, and Edna. In politics the subject is a Democrat, and served as trustee of Bartlow Township from 1897 to 1903, while in 1904 he was appointed to the same office to fill a vacancy, serving seven or eight months. He served on the school board for many years and at present is director for district No. 3. He is a member of the Lutheran church, of which he is secretary and an elder. Mr. PETERSON is one of the live, active citizens of his community and always seeks to advance in every way possible the best interests of the people at large.

The worst thing about history is every time it repeats itself the price goes up.

Index of German Scrapbook Translations, Vol. 2

Several years ago a three-volume set of family scrapbooks was donated to our society. The items were cut from at least one German-language newspaper from this area, but not dated or otherwise identified. It is probable that most of the articles came Per Defiance Herold (1895-1920) and included items regarding families in western Henry Co. and in Twps. transferred to Defiance Co. Ken Thompson translated the German items for us. An index will be printed as space permits.
